In preparation for the launch of exquisitejobs, I created a survey to judge what sort of work people were looking for. The results were interesting, so I put some charts together to share.
See a screenshot of the survey here.
The survey sent to the freelancers that signed up for the beta, and got around 70 responses. This is a fairly small sample size, there is no guarantee this is an accurate representation of the entire exquisitejobs community, so take it for what it's worth.
(An aside: The survey had a option to express interest in design work, however due to a database error, any checks were unfortunately not recorded)
There were a good spread of skills, with the vast majority checking web development, and far too many checking other (who are you and what do you do 47%!?)
81.4% of responses said they were interested in web development work.
I estimate around 35% of responses checked design, but this is based on a very small portion of data I received after I fixed the bug. It could be wildly inaccurate.
32.2% of responses checked iOS development.
20.3% of responses checked android development.
A whopping 47.5% checked "other". This is way more than I expected or wanted. A few people emailed me, explaining what they did and why they checked other, professions ranging from backend sysadmins to community relation experts. There was a lot more diversity in the contractors who applied than I accounted for.

The majority of contractors are looking for freelance work, but there is also a fair number that would be ok with permanent work, which is good, as it seems the majority of jobs submitted have been for semi-permanent positions.

Wage is always an interesting topic. The range of desired wage fluctuates wildly among freelancers, and people are always surprised to learn about others who charge significantly higher or lower than themselves. I got a few emails from people saying the choices didn't go high enough, but there weren't that many outliers, most of the responses fell within the range outlined. iOS developers charge the most, compared to android devs, who charge the least.
The mean is consistently higher than the median, meaning the data has positive skew (more lower values). Not by much however, the the overall average desired wage is around $63.

This isn't a very detailed analysis, but it's enough that we can start picking the perfect jobs for the perfect contractors. If this is the type of community you'd be interested in hiring, feel free to signup here.
